Subscription Type Confusion - what triggers an email to group members - 2 new

What triggers an email to group members? I see the choices for "Subscription
Type" of "send each message as it arrives" or "send a summary of new activity
each day". I would think that "activity" would mean new postings in Files,
Pages or Discussions but I do not get any emails about those. Are email

I'm having the same issue. Can't add a member with an email address in
firstname.lastn...@gmail.com format. Message received is "We did not
understand the following email addresses: You can fix the email addresses or
