We are adding an Unix Operator to our San Francisco office. This individual will work during the night shift hours of 11:00 PM to 7:30 AM, Sunday to Friday.  The operator is also required to work some holidays on a 12-hour shift as part of a rotation between several other operators on the team.

 

This position entails monitoring Unix processes and running various batch jobs to ensure their completion for clients on the next day.  The job requires communication with clients, peers, supervisors/managers, operators and various support staff.  The Unix Operator will perform backups and monitor daily processes in the data center.

 

As a computer operations employee, we expect you will:

 

  • Provide client support and system monitoring
  • Schedule, execute and monitor computer programs
  • Perform file transfers, backup/restore functions, monitor computer room environments, various reporting statistics, and respond to client requests

 

Primary responsibilities:

 

  • Maintain incremental and full backups, catalog and archive tapes
  • Ensure system backup procedures are successfully performed according to schedules
  • Monitor all backups and escalate as issues arise
  • Telecommunications – retrieving and uploading client data files from/to external client ftp sites
  • Monitoring job processes in the nightly job queue and rerun failed batch processes; ensure tasks are processed in accordance with schedule of operations
  • Conduct minor troubleshooting – system stalls, disk full errors, resolve SUN downtime situations to resume and continue normal operations in accordance to specific guidelines
  • Complete special projects and duties as assigned by management

 

Qualifications

 

  • Ability to work in a technically complex computer and network environment
  • 3+ years of Unix experience and some Windows 2003 and XP experience
  • Good technical knowledge of Windows, Linux, TCP/IP, SAN technology, familiarity with Cisco routers and switches
  • Excellent telephone manners and good interpersonal skills, with ability to work in a team environment
  • Must be diligent, organized, patient, and trustworthy
